What does working for the common good mean?

If you do something for the common good, you do it for the well-being of everyone, not just a particular group or a selected few. For us, working for the common good means making sure that our elected officials work together as a team to make decisions based on what is best for our citizens, not just for those advancing a political or personal agenda.

 

In the words of John Adams, “Government is instituted for the common good; for the protection, safety, prosperity, and happiness of the people; and not for the profit, honor, or private interest of any one man, family, or class of men.

 

To work towards the common good means differences and controversies are addressed in a civil and professional manner and resolved in ways that meet the needs of the county. Together we are Mathews. 

 

 

How did we get started?

Citizens from around the county were sharing their collective concerns about how the decisions and directions taken by the current Board of Supervisors did not reflect the values, concerns, and needs of the Mathews we all know and love.  These conversations led to the creation of Mathews Citizens for the Common Good, a political committee of volunteers who plan to work together to campaign for and elect local candidates for public office who will work in the best interest of Mathews and its citizens.

What candidates will we support?​

Mathews Citizens for the Common Good will endorse and work to elect those candidates for our local Board of Supervisors and School Board who are the most qualified, possess the needed experiences and skills, and have the best interests of Mathews County at heart. We intend to support a team of candidates who agree that we need to lead Mathews differently and get our county back on track. 

 

​The candidates we support will be focused on local issues that impact our everyday lives and not state or national politics. Candidates are not selected because of their political party affiliation. You, the voters, will decide if we have chosen the best ones. 

 

How will we support the candidates?

We intend to support the team of candidates in a number of ways. We will:

• Raise money

• Host fundraising events

• Get the word out

• Publicize the issues

• Hold town halls

• Help get out the vote

 

What issues do we think matter most for Mathews?​

• Solicit and respect diverse voices and positions.

• Ensure our children have access to a quality public school education.

• Foster a business friendly environment and favorable climate for visitors

• Protect our county's natural resources and assets

• Make decisions in the best interest of all members of the community
